The Experience of a Rookie Power of Attorney Series, Topic Six

Greetings!

Where Shall you Reside Now? There may come a time when you can no longer live alone or with your spouse or other persons. You will need some level of experienced care. That could be assisted living, in- home care, or memory care. In some cases, the doctors will indicate the specific type of care you need. In my friend’s case, her cognitive skills and communication capabilities had declined considerably in addition to her cancer beginning to take hold of her body. It was recommended that she be placed in a memory care facility.

As POA, it was my responsibility to locate the potential facilities, evaluate them, and make a decision as to where Alma would live. It took some time to locate facilities, and a friend of Alma’s helped me by visiting the facilities and reporting back to me her findings. This made a world of difference since I live over three hours away. The decision was made and once there was a private room available, she was moved from the hospital to the memory care facility. The facility was very nice, clean, had professional management and staff, and lots of activities for the residents. When I visited Alma, it was fun to watch as she played table ice hockey and other games, plus she loved to listen to the entertainers in the afternoon. There was an ice cream parlor which became a favorite of hers following the music or singing. Selecting the facility that best suits the person you are caring for is very important and should not be taken lightly.

When my friend was in the hospital, I was asked if I had funeral arrangements. I was taken back as I had not even thought of her passing. It was suggested that I make the arrangements as the hospital would need to know the details. They gave me the names of two funeral homes in the area which had been there for quite some time and were very reputable. I contacted them both and made the decision and the arrangements. This information was also requested when Alma moved to the memory care facility.

I realize these have not been fun topics of late; however, I feel strongly that they will help you and your loved ones in the future.

The last in this series will appear March 29th, please read.
